Big Bear Lake Real Estate and Community Information

THE DISCOVERY OF BIG BEAR VALLEY

Big Bear Valley was actually discovered by accident. 22 young Californians, including one Benjamin Davis Wilson, were in pursuit of Indian cattle rustlers who had been raiding Southland ranches. Their pursuit led them through a thick pine forest and into a swampy area. These young cowboys did not find the rustlers they were looking for. Instead, they found the area to be teeming with grizzly bears!  Wilson appropriately named the area "Bear Valley".

During the next few years, there were few visitors to Bear Valley, until the discovery of gold in 1948. More and more prospectors trekked to the beautiful mountains and in 1860, while on a bear hunting trip, Bill Holcomb discovered another beautiful valley near Fawnskin real estate to the north of Big Bear Lake. While tracking a wounded bear, Holcomb came across some gold in a quartz ledge. Upon further investigation, Holcomb realized this was indeed a good sized gold strike. The news spread swiftly and soon, "Holcomb´s Valley" became a booming gold mining town. Legend has it that the main vein of gold was never found.

Big Bear Lake Community

Holcomb Valley became flooded with gold miners and developed into a sizable community. At one time, there were so many people living there, it was considered as the location for the San Bernardino County Seat. History accounts that it only lost by a few votes!

The Big Bear Lake Discovery Center has available maps that take visitors through a "self-guided" tour of the remnants and historical sites in Holcomb Valley. The Big Bear Valley Museum in Big Bear City is another good source for studying the origins of Big Bear.

Big Bear Lake Today

Modern day Big Bear Lake is a popular tourist destination. With so many activities, statistics show that Big Bear Lake attracts more people annually than does Disneyland!  Visitors come not only from Southern California, but Las Vegas, San Diego, Arizona, and Northern California as well. It is a four season resort with beautiful summers where temperatures rarely get over 85 degrees and winters that are just cold enough to drop some snow in the Valley. Two major ski areas, Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit offer skiing for both beginners and experts. The snowboard park at Big Bear Mountain is very popular with the "shredders" and is the practice site for many up and coming Olympians. In fact, Shawn White - The Flying Tomato started his snowboarding career right here in Big Bear Lake!
