Fawnskin Real Estate and Community Information

City Background and History

On the Northwest corner of Big Bear Valley is a tributary that empties into Big Bear Lake named Grout Creek. A small settlement was formed on the banks of Grout Creek and was known as "Grout". In the late 1800´s more and more travelers visited Big Bear Valley via the Arrowhead and Green Valley Lake Route. They would make an overnight camp in the beautiful meadow just above Grout Creek Canyon.

As the story goes, on one of these trips to the meadow, they found numerous hides of fawns, which had been slaughtered by a band of unscrupulous hunters, stretched out on the trees. Thereafter, the spot was referred to as Fawn Skin Meadows. As the small community of "Grout" grew, the name Fawnskin was adopted. This new village was officially named "Fawnskin" when the government opened a US Post Office there in 1918.

Local Fawnskin Attractions

The Village area of Fawnskin is barely 2 blocks long. The residential area is built on the side of a mountain and is surrounded on 3 sides by the San Bernardino National Forest. The ski resorts and other tourist attractions are located on the South Shore of Big Bear Lake. With Fawnskin being situated on the North Shore, it is a much slower paced place. The Fawnskin residents fondly refer to their town as located on the "Quiet Side of Lake".

Even though it is located on the North side of the lake, Fawnskin is only 6 miles from the Village of Big Bear Lake. It is only 7 miles to the major grocery stores and a public boat launch is only 1 mile west of the town. Fawnskin has a general store, a couple of restaurants and in the middle of town is the Moose Lodge.

Fawnskin Community Events

Each summer during the Old Miner´s Days celebration, Fawnskin gets involved by hosting the shortest parade in the world: the fun and "tongue in cheek" Doo Dah Parade. The whole town lines the street to root for their favorite clubs and float entries.

Other activities throughout the year include a Pirate Faire, Renaissance Faire, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Fawnskin Festival and the Fawnskin Paddlefest.
